Maqui Berry Powder
Further Information
Maqui berry is a Patagonian wild fruit and quite justifiably a dietary superstar. It is packed with essential vitamins, dietary fibre, protein, carbohydrate, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Maqui has one of the highest antioxidant values of any fruit, and is believed to help protect the body from the problems associated with free radical oxidisation damage – including heart disease, cancer, arthritis and premature ageing. As an all-round superfood to underpin a healthy diet, Maqui berry has few peers.
For centuries the Mapuche people, who are native to the area where Maqui grows, have put this remarkable fruit at the core of their diet and ceremonial practice. Now, thanks to modern processing methods, Maqui is available globally. Although it is regarded as a wide-spectrum superfood, its nutritional profile makes it popular with sportspeople and those who lead active lifestyles.
Antioxidants, the signature component of Maqui berry, are believed increasingly to protect us against most high-profile chronic health conditions. Oxidative stress, the scavenging of electrons at molecular level, is connected to coronary heart disease, arterosclerosis, hypertension, cancer, premature ageing and inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. Maqui berry is known to be anti-inflammatory, as well as antiviral, antibacterial and anti-allergenic. Its antioxidants are also believed to aid the metabolism of sugar, which helps normalise blood sugar-related conditions such as hypoglycaemia and diabetes.
Maqui berry’s carbohydrate is an energy source and vital to active people. The carbohydrate is balanced by a healthy dose of easily-absorbed proteins, which assist the growth, repair and maintenance of muscle tissue. The calcium offered by Maqui is also a vital resource for anyone, being required to create and maintain our bones and teeth. Our nervous system also needs calcium, and it has a part to play in our circulation. Maqui provides several other vital minerals, too. Its iron content is required by us to help produce red blood cells, and so prevent anaemia, while its magnesium is required by every cell in the body. It is essential for efficient nerve and muscle function and helps us absorb protein properly.
The Vitamin C in Maqui berry helps heal wounds and regulate blood flow, but is also highly antioxidant. Maqui also provides Vitamin A, essential for retinal health. It is also key for proper reproductive function. Vitamin E is a blanket term for a range of elements known as tocopherals and tocotrienals. These are important antioxidants.
Maqui berry is also an important source of dietary fibre, an absolutely essential part of our intake and one which many modern foods lack in sufficiency. Fibre stabilises blood sugar, fluctuations in which have a significant impact on performance during sports. It helps prevention of and recovery from gastrointestinal problems, and helps lower blood pressure. Lack of dietary fibre is associated with heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity. Maqui berry is an all-rounder, a superfood which normalises the systems in our bodies, reducing the stress of imbalance and allowing us to function at our peak.
Production
Rainforest Foods raw Maqui berry is nurtured and harvested sustainably in Chile by people from the Mapuche tribe. Their method involves beating the flexible branches to harvest the fruit. They use natural fertilising methods post-harvest. Maqui berry can spoil rapidly, so the fruit is immediately transported to a local production plant, where it is freeze-dried. This involves rapid freezing, then warming to vaporise the frozen water. The freeze-dried fruit is then milled to powder and packed for export.
Ingredients
Freeze-dried raw Maqui berry powder.
