Hemp Protein Powder 400g
Further Information
The milled seed of the Hemp plant has recently emerged as an excellent, multi-talented superfood, after many decades of languishing as a staple winter food for agricultural livestock. It has several headline benefits, which are garnering it popularity among those wanting to add good, easy-to-use broad-spectrum nutritional ingredients to their diets, and participants in activities such as sports. It features a wide variety of essential phytonutrients, as well as a good supply of protein. Rainforest Foods Hemp protein powder is suitable for vegetarians and people with lactose and gluten intolerance, as well as diabetics.
Hemp is a rare food in that it provides all 22 of the amino acids we need in our diets. This includes the 8 essential ones that we cannot make for ourselves and need to take from our food. Hemp also features a huge array of antioxidants, as well as plenty of vitamins and minerals.
Hemp’s other signature virtue is that it is rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, in what has become recognised as the ideal ratio for humans. There are many modern foods that contain Omega oils, but many of these give them in a ratio skewed in favour of Omega-6. The Omega ratio in Hemp aids the cellular health of our brain, and boosts its chemical communication pathways. Hemp has been associated with symptomatic relief for people suffering from depression. Hemp’s Omega fatty acid content is vital for healthy blood, regulates blood pressure and promotes good cardiac health overall. It is also important for proper immune function and stabilised blood sugar.
Hemp’s proteins are the globular proteins edestin and albumin. These are easily digestible by humans and promote healthy immune system function. One thing Hemp lacks is oligosaccharides, which can inhibit our absorption of proteins. Hemp’s protein-availability is one reason why it is increasingly popular with sportspeople and those enjoying active lifestyles. About 50% of Hemp protein’s mass is actually protein.
Hemp contains abundant chlorophyll, which allows plants to convert light into energy via photosynthesis. It is high in magnesium, which is essential to humans for bone strength, proper muscle function and normalising blood pressure and flow. Hemp provides a good range of vitamins and minerals, including iron, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, zinc and copper. Calcium promotes the growth and maintenance of healthy, strong bones and teeth, as well as good circulatory and nerve health. Iron aids red blood cell production, preventing anaemia. Magnesium is required by every cell in the body. It is essential for efficient nerve and muscle function and helps us absorb protein properly. Phosphorous is required for general cellular function. Copper helps the body absorb fats and aids melanin and dopamine production, governing mood, reaction to sunlight and skin health. Zinc is essential. It is required by almost every organ and biological process, is a basic necessity for proper mental function, and has a role in sexual development and health.
Rainforest Foods Hemp seed provides a healthy core to any diet, thanks to its wide-ranging nutritional profile. It also has a pleasant, nutty flavour, and as a result is easy to use as an ingredient in both cooked and raw foods.
Production
Rainforest Foods raw Hemp is organically grown. Once harvested, the seeds are analysed to detect contaminants, and cleaned to remove foreign bodies. They are then sorted to remove any unhealthy seeds, and pressed to extract the oil. The resulting pulp of fibre and protein, or 'Hemp cake', is milled. A process of sieving separates the fibre from the protein, which is collected as a powder and packaged for transport.
Organic Certification
Rainforest Foods Hemp protein is certified by the Soil Association, one of a handful of organic certification bodies in the UK. These are regulated in their turn by DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). The role of the Soil Association is to ensure that all foods sold as organic are definably so. It does this by auditing every stage of the supply chain, through growth, export and processing. Soil Association certification – indicated by the Soil Association logo and the EU organic leaf symbol on our packaging – is a guarantee that our customers are purchasing an organic product. All organically-certified products must also carry a certification code on their packaging. For UK companies such as Rainforest Foods this has the format GB-ORG-XX, XX indicating the certifying body. If this is not present, a product is not organic. The Soil Association code on our products is GB-ORG-05. Ingredients Organic raw Hemp protein powder.
Suggested Use
We recommend that you add a scoop (20-30g) of Hemp protein powder to water, milk, juice or a smoothie, 2-3 times daily or as required. Hemp protein is a versatile food ingredient. It can be added to smoothies or deserts, or incorporated into cooked food such as bread.
