Chlorella & Spirulina Capsules
Further Information
Chlorella and Spirulina are species of algae (Chlorella vulgaris and Arthrospira platensis). They are two of the most complete superfoods in existence. Excellent sources of protein, they provide carbohydrate and broad-spectrum vitamins, plus a wide range of minerals and gut flora-supporting enzymes. Chlorella is popular as a substantial aid to detoxification, while Spirulina has a high antioxidant content. Together they foster a healthy immune system, help normalize blood sugar and allow the maintenance of healthy muscle and bone structures. As many people supplement their diets with both Chlorella and Spirulina, we have combined them equally in one convenient capsule.
Both Chlorella and Spirulina are well known as powerful detoxification agents. However, they are also regarded as highly useful general dietary supplements that provide broad support for a healthy diet. They are justifiably popular among people with active lifestyles, thanks to their high protein content. This is easily-absorbed protein, to help us build, repair and maintain muscle tissue. Chlorella also features an element known as Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF), an immune system stimulator which bolsters our natural defences against disease and speeds the healing of damaged tissue.
Chlorella and Spirulina together pack a significant arsenal of vitamins. Their Vitamin A aids retinal health and is key for proper reproductive function in mammals, as well as forming and maintaining basic body structures. Vitamin C helps heal wounds and regulate blood flow, but is also highly antioxidant, aiding protection against and recovery from heart disease, cancer, arthritis and premature ageing. Vitamin E is also antioxidant, preventing disease and helping wounds heal, while Vitamin K plays a role in blood, heart and bone health. Vitamin B9 (folic acid) is also important here, as well as being essential for women before and during pregnancy. In fact, these foods contain a complex of B vitamins that foster proper function of the nervous system and muscles, extract energy from carbohydrates and produce healthy red blood cells, absorb amino acids and chemicals involved in brain function and, in the case of B12, benefit almost every bodily process.
Minerals are another key component of Chlorella & Spirulina capsules. They contain calcium, which promotes healthy, strong bones and teeth, plus good circulatory and nerve health. Iron aids red blood cell production to prevent anaemia, phosphorous is required for general cellular function and potassium works with sodium to allow nervous impulses to flow and facilitate muscle reaction. Chlorella is alkalising, helping balance pH values in the body and counteract the acidifying effects of a modern diet. This combination superfood is anti-allergenic, will strengthen you against infection and help you recover if you become ill.
Production
Rainforest Foods Chlorella and Spirulina are grown organically on an island in the South China Sea. Laboratory-cultivated batches grow and multiply by photosynthesis in cultivation ponds containing filtered natural water. Once they have reached the required density the products are harvested. They are dried by a process known as spray evaporation, which retains virtually all the available nutritional value while rendering the product into powder form. Next, the tough cell wall of the Chlorella is broken. While this is an aid to detoxification as it binds toxins to it during digestion, it also creates a barrier which reduces the amount of nutrients available from within the cell. The cell wall-breaking process does not damage the contents, but does make them bio-available.
The powder is encapsulated in the UK by a leading GMP (Good Marketing Practice)-registered pharmaceutical manufacturer. GMP registration requires rigorous inspection by the MHRA (Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency), the government agency responsible for ensuring that medicines and medical devices work and are safe. Regular GMP audits enforce optimum quality standards in the encapsulation process. Rainforest Foods capsule casings are made from HPMC, a plant-based cellulose material approved for vegetarian and vegan use by the Vegetarian Society, and Halal and Kosher-certified. HPMC is about as biologically neutral a foodstuff as it is possible to find, and the only other ingredient in the casings is water. Read our blog article on the subject for more information. The capsules are 100% pure, using no fillers, binders or bulking agents. Each capsule contains 400mg of powder.
Organic Certification
Rainforest Foods Chlorella and Spirulina capsules are certified by the Soil Association, one of a handful of organic certification bodies in the UK. These are regulated in their turn by DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). The role of the Soil Association is to ensure that all foods sold as organic are definably so. It does this by auditing every stage of the supply chain, through growth, export and processing. Soil Association certification – indicated by the Soil Association logo and the EU organic leaf symbol on our packaging – is a guarantee that our customers are purchasing an organic product. All organically-certified products must also carry a certification code on their packaging. For UK companies such as Rainforest Foods this has the format GB-ORG-XX, XX indicating the certifying body. If this is not present, a product is not organic. The Soil Association code on our products is GB-ORG-05.
