Camu Camu Powder 125g
Further Information
Camu camu is the reddish-purple berry of an Amazonian rainforest tree. It has only recently made its mark on the superfood map, but is fast gaining recognition as one of the world’s richest sources of natural vitamin C. This is one of several antioxidants offered by Camu camu, alongside other phytochemicals, blood sugar-stabilising myrtillin and anti-fungal gallic acid. Camu camu is recognised as a stabiliser of the human system, helping us resist disease and heal rapidly.
Vitamin C is a fundamental part of the human diet. We require it for healthy skin, nerves, muscle tissue and bone structures. It helps wounds heal and is needed to stem bleeding. It is also very antioxidant, protecting us against the chronic illness associated with oxidative stress, including hypertension, arterosclerosis and coronary heart disease. It helps us metabolise sugar, avoiding hypoglycaemia and diabetes.
While Vitamin C is readily available in fresh fruit and vegetables, our diets rarely include enough. Furthermore, our bodies do not store Vitamin C, so we need to consume it regularly. There are many Vitamin C supplements available, most of which contain a synthesised product. However, Camu camu is a natural source of Vitamin C, which also provides supportive nutrition which in fact helps us utilise the Vitamin C more efficiently. This includes the essential amino acids valine and leucine, which we cannot make for ourselves, and a range of other antioxidant elements. Camu camu provides myrtillin, an antioxidant which tends to stabilise our blood sugar and avoid the symptoms of hypoglycaemia and diabetes. It also contains the antioxidant gallic acid, which is the anti-fungal component in witch hazel.
Camu camu has a sharp, fruity taste, and makes an interesting ingredient in food. It is a very worthwhile fruit which has been part of the diet in its native Amazonian region for many centuries.
Production
Rainforest Foods Camu camu is grown by farmers in the Amazonian region of Peru. It requires lots of water, and in the wild grows along water courses. The fruit is harvested by hand, at the peak of the rainy season. The fruit flesh is freeze-dried – rapidly frozen then warmed and depressurised to vaporise the frozen water content. The freeze-dried pulp is milled to powder form and packed for transport.
Organic Certification
Rainforest Foods Camu camu is certified by the Soil Association, one of a handful of organic certification bodies in the UK. These are regulated in their turn by DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). The role of the Soil Association is to ensure that all foods sold as organic are definably so. It does this by auditing every stage of the supply chain, through growth, export and processing. Soil Association certification – indicated by the Soil Association logo and the EU organic leaf symbol on our packaging – is a guarantee that our customers are purchasing an organic product. All organically-certified products must also carry a certification code on their packaging. For UK companies such as Rainforest Foods this has the format GB-ORG-XX, XX indicating the certifying body. If this is not present, a product is not organic. The Soil Association code on our products is GB-ORG-05.
